What Is an Electric Strike?

An electric strike replaces the fixed strike plate on a door frame. When energized by a button, keypad, or card reader, the strike releases the latch allowing the door to open without a key.

Our Brands

HES — The most widely specified electric strike brand in commercial construction. The HES 4500 Series is a heavy-duty strike for mortise locks; the HES 5200 Series suits cylindrical locksets in narrower frame applications.

Trine — High-quality strikes for light commercial and residential access control.

Adams Rite — Specialty strikes for narrow-stile aluminum storefront glass doors.

Fail-Safe vs. Fail-Secure

Fail-Safe — Unlocks when power is lost. Required by code on emergency egress doors.

Fail-Secure — Remains locked when power is lost. Used where security during power outage is the priority.

FAQs

What's the difference between the HES 4500 and 5200 Series? The 4500 is built for mortise lock applications; the 5200 is sized for cylindrical (bored) locksets, commonly used where frame depth is limited.

Can an electric strike replace an existing standard strike? In most cases yes — HES and Trine offer drop-in replacement strikes that fit existing mortises without frame modification.
