What Is a Lock Cylinder?

A lock cylinder is the removable core of a lock that accepts the key and operates the locking mechanism. Cylinder locks are replaceable — allowing facilities to rekey or upgrade a lock without replacing the entire lockset. Mortise lock cylinders and keyed cylinder locks are the two most common replacement types for commercial doors.

What is the difference between a cylinder lock and a mortise lock cylinder? "Cylinder lock" is the general term for any lock using a replaceable cylinder core. A mortise lock cylinder is a specific type sized and threaded to fit mortise lock bodies rather than cylindrical (bored) locksets.

What is a keyed cylinder lock? A cylinder lock operated by a cut key rather than a combination or electronic credential — the standard type used in most commercial cylinder replacements.
