What Is a Commercial Access Control System?

A commercial access control system replaces or supplements mechanical keys with electronic credentials — keypads, card readers, or app-based access — to control who can open a door and when. Most systems combine three types of hardware: an electrified lock or strike, a power supply and controller, and a credential reader. What hardware do I need for a commercial access control system? At minimum: an electrified lock or strike, a power supply, and a credential reader/controller from your access control provider. What is the difference between access control hardware and a full access control system? Access control hardware (locks, strikes, power transfer hinges) is the physical layer that lets a door be released electronically. The "system" — credentials, software, user management — is typically a separate access control platform that integrates with this hardware.

What is an electromagnetic lock? Uses a powerful electromagnet to hold a door closed. When access is granted, power interrupts and the door releases. No moving parts provide extremely high reliability in commercial access control installations.
